FAQs

Do you ensure quality?

Absolutely! Noisy Cargo's durability, softness, and safety standards are all part of our dedication to quality. We manage all aspects of the development process, from fabric, design, sewing, construction, and trims—and back this up with third-party testing to ensure every product meets all U.S. Safety and our premium quality standards.

What does GOTS-certified organic mean, and why does Noisy Cargo use it?

Gots-certified (Global Organic Textile Standard) means no chemical pesticides have been used to grow cotton. But GOTS goes beyond that. It is better for your skin, the environment, and the workers. The organic cotton feels wonderfully soft and lasts for years.

What is the difference between Conventional cotton and GOTS-certified Organic cotton?

Conventional cotton and GOTS-certified (Global Organic Textile Standard) cotton differ significantly in how they are cultivated and processed and in their environmental and social impacts.

Cultivation:

Conventional cotton is cultivated using pesticides and fertilizers. Cotton crops are water-intensive, using three times more water than their organic counterparts. The seeds are often genetically modified to increase resistance to pests and diseases and to improve yields.

GOTS cotton is grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilizers. Organic cotton farming relies on natural substances and physical, mechanical, or biologically based farming methods. This method reduces pollution and soil degradation and uses less water because organic cotton is frequently grown in rain-fed areas. GOTS standards prohibit using genetically modified seeds, ensuring the cultivation process remains natural.

Processing:

The processing of conventional cotton (such as dyeing, bleaching, and finishing) often uses a range of chemicals that can harm workers and the environment. The energy consumption in conventional cotton processing can be relatively high, increasing its carbon footprint.

GOTS certification imposes strict criteria for using dyes and other chemicals during processing. These substances must meet specific environmental and toxicological criteria. The standard also includes requirements for wastewater treatment and restricts energy use and emissions in processing, alongside strong labor provisions that protect workers' rights.

Certification:

There is generally no specific certification for environmental and social practices in conventional cotton production and processing.

GOTS certification covers ecological and social criteria. It requires compliance with all of the standard's criteria, which are monitored by independent and rigorous third-party inspections at all stages of production and processing.

Cost and Availability:

Conventional cotton is less expensive due to higher yields and the economies of scale in traditional farming and processing techniques. It is also more widely available as it makes up most of the cotton market.

GOTS-certified cotton is more expensive due to more stringent farming practices, lower yields, and the costs associated with certification and maintaining organic practices. It is also less prevalent in the market than conventional cotton, but availability is growing as demand for sustainable and ethically produced goods increases.

Why should I choose GOTS Organic versus traditional cotton?

Choosing between conventional and GOTS-certified cotton often depends on the consumer's environmental impact, health, and social responsibility values. While more expensive, GOTS-certified cotton offers a sustainable alternative with a significantly lower environmental impact and more significant social benefits, aligning with broader trends toward sustainability and ethical production in the textile industry.
